“More than meets the eye”, this is the expression that comes in my mind when I think about this car, and let me tell you why. Guys from Chevy advertised their new Corvette ZR-1 as the most powerfull and the fastest ‘Vette they’ve ever built. Well… they lied.
41 years ago, all the way back to 1969, the glorious year when Neil Armstrong put his foot on the Moon for the first time in mankind history, an american car manufacturer named Chevrolet was presenting the world, their new ideea of what a sports car should be, and so the back then new Corvette Stingray ZL-1 maked its debut.
In fact, the car was an update of the already present on the market, Corvette C3. This ZL-1 version was fitted with their biggest engine, the 427 cubic inch ( 7 L ), V8 which they claimed it produced 430 hp, though many knew it had at least 100 hp more.
Now, we know that the new ZR-1, produces 634 hp from its supercharged V8, can reach a top speed of about 205 mph, and the 0 to 60 mph acceleration is achieved in 3.2-3.4 sec which is very fast.
Well, get a load of this: someone stated in 1999 that the old ZL-1 was in fact capable of producing 710 hp without any supercharging needed.
So there you have it : the most powerfull and the fastest Corvette ever built was on the market since 1969. Drawn back by its tires and its suspension, if it had a set of wheels from our days and a more advanced suspension kit it could easily beat all the numbers I mentioned earlier from the ZR-1.
